What is Cyber Bullying ?

Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.
Examples of cyber bullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.

What are some of the effects of Cyber Bullying online?
Like all forms of bullying, cyberbullying causes psychological, emotional and physical stress.
Each person’s response to being bullied is unique, but research has shown some general tendencies.
Youth who are bullied are more likely to struggle personally and at school. They may:
  • miss, skip or drop out of school
  • receive poor grades
  • have lower self-esteem
  • use alcohol and drugs
Bullying can lead to thoughts about suicide, sometimes persisting into adulthood. In one study, adults who were bullied as youth were three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts or inclinations.

How do you stop Cyber Bullying?
Look for signs of harassment. Cyber bullying often takes the form of one person harassing another through emails, instant messages, text messages or other modes of electronic communication. Harassment is taking place if the bully is directly contacting someone with one or more of the following types of messaging:
  • Hateful or threatening verbal messages. This includes name-calling, attempts to control someone's behavior by threatening to expose embarrassing information and/or threats of violence.
  • Embarrassing or threatening images or videos.
  • An unending barrage of emails, instant messages or texts, whether or not they are threatening in nature.
  • Lies about the person to make them look bad.
